What is the Progesterone Only Pill?

The Progesterone Only Pill , also known as the “POP” or “mini pill” is a popular form of oral contraception (birth control). It is taken every day, without any breaks or sugar pills. It must be taken within the same 3 hour period each day or else it doesn’t work properly and pregnancy can occur. The Progesterone Only Pill prevents pregnancy by thickening the mucus in the cervix (neck of the uterus), so sperm can’t get in. It also makes the lining of the uterus less likely to allow a pregnancy to implant. In some women it may prevent ovulation.

One of the most common reasons for women to choose the POP is if they’re breastfeeding, as it does not affect the flow of breast milk (unlike the regular pill -the COCP- which can reduce milk production). The POP is also used if the COCP is contraindicated for medical reasons, such as migraine with aura, or a family history of blood clots.
