Overview

“Bali Belly” is a common term used to describe traveller’s diarrhoea experienced by visitors to Bali and other tropical regions. It is typically caused by consuming contaminated food or water and results in symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms usually appear within a few hours to a few days after exposure and can range from mild to severe.

Preventing Bali Belly involves taking several precautions such as avoiding tap water (including ice cubes!), and opting for bottled or purified water instead. It’s also important to eat at reputable restaurants, avoid street food, and ensure that food is thoroughly cooked. Washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating, can also help reduce the risk.

If you do contract Bali Belly, staying hydrated is the most crucial initial step. Oral rehydration solutions (such as Hydralyte) or electrolyte drinks can help replenish lost fluids and salts. Over-the-counter medications like loperamide can alleviate diarrhoea symptoms, but it is important to consult a healthcare professional if symptoms are severe or persist for more than a couple of days.
