PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) is an infection of a woman’s uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and the inside of the pelvis. It is a complication often caused by certain STIs, such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. However, other infections that are not sexually transmitted can also cause PID.

PID can be silent or may cause abdominal pain, vaginal discharge, fever, burning when passing urine, pain during sex or irregular vaginal bleeding. Some women can become very ill with PID, and may need admission to hospital for high dose antibiotic treatment. PID can lead to complications such as ectopic pregnancy, chronic (long term) pelvic pain, infertility, and an increased risk of cancer- so early diagnosis and treatment is important.
