Overview
Threadworms, also known as pinworms, are small parasitic worms that commonly infect children. These worms are small, white and thin, and live in the intestines. The primary symptom of a threadworm infection is intense itching around the anus, especially at night, which can disturb sleep. If a young child is not sleeping well for no apparent reason, threadworms should always be considered!
Threadworms spread easily through the ingestion of their microscopic eggs, which can be transferred to hands, toys, bedding, and other surfaces from scratching. Once ingested, the eggs hatch in the intestines, and the cycle continues.
To diagnose a threadworm infection, a doctor may recommend the “tape test,” which involves gently pressing a piece of clear tape against the skin around the anus to collect any eggs for microscopic examination.
Treatment usually involves taking over-the-counter or prescription antiparasitic medications, such as mebendazole, which are effective in killing the worms. It’s important to treat all household members simultaneously to prevent reinfection. Additionally, thorough hygiene practices are crucial.
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Wash bed linens, nightwear, and underwear in hot water daily during treatment. Keep fingernails short and discourage children from scratching their bottoms.
