Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp and are commonly spread among children through direct head-to-head contact or by sharing personal items like hats, brushes, or hair accessories.
The first step in managing head lice is confirmation. Careful combing with a fine-toothed lice comb through wet hair is an effective way to spot live lice. If lice or eggs (nits) are found, treatment should begin immediately.
Over-the-counter lotions and shampoos containing permethrin or pyrethrin are commonly used treatments. These should be applied according to the instructions, usually requiring a second application seven to ten days after the first to kill any newly hatched lice. It’s also essential to wash bedding, clothing, and stuffed toys in hot water to eradicate any lice or nits that may have spread.
Finally, checking and combing the hair regularly and maintaining good communication with school or childcare to manage outbreaks is key to keeping lice at bay.
