Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness that primarily affects children, although it can occur at any age. It’s caused by several types of enteroviruses, with Coxsackievirus being the most typical. HFMD is characterised by sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet, sometimes accompanied by fever, sore throat, and a general feeling of being unwell.
The disease spreads through direct contact with nasal secretions, saliva, fluid from blisters, or stool of an infected person. HFMD is usually mild and resolves on its own within 7 to 10 days. There is no specific treatment, but symptoms can be managed with pain relief medications to reduce fever and soreness. Good hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with those infected, can help in preventing the spread of HFMD.
