Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infection that mainly affects small children. It typically presents with a rash or small blisters on the hands and feet, as well as in and/or around the mouth. It is not related to “foot and mouth disease” that is found in animals. There are two main types of viruses that cause HFMD, with the symptoms varying somewhat, depending on which virus is involved. HFMD spreads very easily from one child to another. You can get HFMD more than once, though generally it’s less severe on subsequent occasions.
