Vitamin D is crucial for maintaining healthy bones and supporting the function of your immune system. It helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for bone health. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to “bone softening” diseases, for example,  rickets in children, osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Common causes of Vitamin D deficiency include inadequate sunlight exposure, poor dietary intake, and certain medical conditions affecting nutrient absorption. Aging also leads to reduced production of Vitamin D in the skin.

Symptoms of deficiency can include bone pain and muscle weakness, though symptoms may be subtle or even absent. Treatment typically involves vitamin D supplementation and increased (safe) exposure to sunlight. Ensuring a balanced diet with adequate levels of vitamin D is also recommended.
