Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back down through the hips, buttocks, and legs. This condition is typically caused by compression or irritation of the nerve, for example due to a herniated disk, a bone spur, or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis). Symptoms include pain that can vary from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort. Sometimes, it may feel like a jolt or electric shock. Numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the affected leg may also occur. Treatment for sciatica ranges from physical therapy and medication to reduce inflammation, to exercises that can help relieve pressure on the nerve. In severe cases, surgery might be considered to alleviate the underlying cause.
