• Viagra is a tablet that is used to treat erectile dysfunction  (also referred to as E.D or male impotence). The generic name is Sildenafil.
• It belongs to a group of drugs known as phosphodiesterase inhibitors- these medications work by increasing blood flow to the penis and help to achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra was the first of the phosphodiesterase inhibitors to become well known, but now there are a number of other options also available.
• It is normally taken 40 minutes before sexual intercourse and it may continue to have an effect for about 4 hours afterwards.
• It is usually recommended to start with the lowest dose of 25mg and assess response. It can subsequently be increased to 50mg and then to 100mg, only if needed.
• Most people get no side effects and serious side effects are uncommon
• Side effects (usually mild) may include headache, palpitations, nasal congestion, blurred vision, indigestion, flushing
